BOAT
INDIAN RUNNER 4
29 ft long
2 rowing stations
4 oars and 1 mattress
This is 'INDIAN RUNNER 4', named after a breed of duck! Check out the photos in the gallery. Currently being shipped home from Mauritius (arriving September), we will make a few repairs and will be looking to sell her. Please get in touch if you would like any more information.
We have opted for a carbon fibre shell over the more common glass fibre. The carbon is lighter, and therefore should be faster, but it is relatively untested in the ocean rowing world.
We carried a water maker which turns the sea water into drinking water. This is a vital piece of kit as we each consumed over 6 litres per day!
Our main food source was army style ration packs (boil in a bag) and we used a smaller gas powered stove to heat our water. Luxuries such as chocolate and sweets are also important and good for morale. Unfortunately, we have no fridge, so fruit, veg and meat sadly didnt make the trip.
All of this is powered by solar panels attached to the top of the boat. These panels will also power our GPS (Global Positioning System), sat phone, instruments and AIS (Automatic Identification System) so that we are seen by bigger ships!
We also carried a life raft, life lines and Spinlock life jackets just in case.
Both the Solo and Pairs Woodvale class entrants compete in Woodvale Solo class boats for all ocean races. The Woodvale Fours composite boat is the chosen design for the larger class of boat.
"The Woodvale Fours class boat was specifically designed to tackle the North Atlantic in the 2006 North Atlantic Rowing Race. The design has been rigorously tank tested and has the most aggressive self righting characteristics of any crewed ocean rowing boat. The prototype of this boat broke the North Atlantic Rowing record from Canada to the Silly Isles in 2005 beating the previous record by 16 days." Source: Woodvale Challenge
The boats are only available to be built by the Woodvale boat building team or can be purchased on the second hand market.
